The Flowertown Players are proud to present our new Studio Spotlight Series, beginning in September with The Wolves by Sarah DeLappe and culminating with Take Me Out by Richard Greenberg in April 2024. Behind the historic James F. Dean Theatre is an unassuming cinder block building. Once a church, this structure has been stripped down to bare walls and serves as a black box studio for rehearsing main-stage shows and educational programming. There has not been a production in that space since 2019. That all changes this fall when it will be transformed into an indoor soccer field that sets the stage for DeLappe’s exhilarating and raw coming-of-age story about the resiliency of the American teenager. This drama surrounding the all-girl team was a finalist for the Pulitzer in 2017 and won an Obie award for best ensemble. The show is one of the most talked about new plays and had two sold-out runs off-Broadway. At FTP we try to curate a main-stage season that represents the artistic tastes of the community, and for that reason, we often choose shows that have name recognition. We tend to be more conservative in our selections, typically avoiding lesser-known plays that have strong language or situations that may offend some theatergoers. We depend on selling those seats so we can stay in business. We are very happy with our main stage selections, and as our increased season ticket sales indicate, so is the community. However, that doesn’t leave much room for experimenting with new titles or developing new work. That’s where the studio comes in. Just like an off-Broadway venue might, it allows us to take some artistic risks by putting on shows like The Wolves and Take Me Out, or other new plays that may appeal to a smaller audience. That being said, there is plenty of excitement surrounding these shows and the reopening of the studio.
Director Sarah Daniel has put together a talented ensemble cast for The Wolves and they have been rehearsing on and off the field to bring you a powerful and intimate experience.
Charleston actor, writer, director, and educator Michael Smallwod will helm the all-male ensemble of Take Me Out, Greenberg’s Tony-winning locker-room drama hot off of a Broadway revival. Auditions will be announced later this year.
