Summerville's Community Theatre
The mission of The Flowertown Players, Inc., is to produce and present quality community theater, to encourage and promote educational and literary performing arts projects for all segments of the tri-county population, and to provide a venue for thespians, artists, technicians, and other creative people to practice their crafts.
The Theatre on the Square in downtown Summerville was built in 1935 and flourished as a movie house until the early 1960s. Established in 1976, The Flowertown Players bought and renovated the 209-seat theatre. With state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment and special facilities specifically for the disabled, the James F. Dean Community Theatre is listed as part of the Historic District in the National Register of Historic Districts. Since 1976, The Flowertown Players has been the only theatre company in Summerville and the only continuously running community theatre in Dorchester County.
